The last time I've been blown up to pieces by a sci-fi a movie is on June 2009 by Meganformer - in a bad way.
In a good way ... The Matrix. My God, it's been a decade!
I am not saying that there ain't any good sci-fi movies after the Matrix.
Sunshine is one of it.
But .. District 9 is beyond my wildest dream. Some people may call it a hype but for me District 9 is a masterpiece and the best movie of 2009 so far....
If only I watch it together with Michael Bay.
Bay: Where's the bloody explosion? Where's the bootylicious gal? F$%#, this movie looks cheap and too smart for me. Who the f%$# are going to watch this crap?
John: Well, the budget is only 30 mil but it's more realistic than Transformers 2. And we do care about the character in it.
Bay: Hey, f#$% you! If a movie don't have Megan Fox in it, it's a shit movie!
John: Peter Jackson think it's a brilliant movie as well. That's why he put his name on it. He even think to get Blomkamp to direct HALO.
Bay: Who's Peter Jackson?
John: You really are dumb. Why don't you call Ari Gold to ask who's that guy.
Bay: Yeah, good idea. I better call him. Do you got his number?
John: (sigh) let me call Vincent Chase, alrite ...
Bay: Thanks buddy
John: (disbelief) no worries mate
District 9 is one of the movies that I URGE, no no no, BEG you to see it! Not next week, not tomorrow .. NOW!
You won't believe that Blomkamp (this is his first MAJOR motion picture) can create such a movie with such an originality. District 9 kinda like give the middle finger to Hollywood and show 'em that they should ashamed of themselves by showing us, the movie audiences, lots of crap movies in this summer.
And how about the unknown actor, Sharlto Copley to lead the cast as the doomed Van de Merwe? Unf#$%ingbelievable!!!! This is a performance of veteran actor not an unknown one. He's definitely not Shia LaBeouf. He's twice better. The way we hate Van de Merwe in the first half and took pity on him on the second half is due to Copley's terrific performance.
And the special effect is better than any blockbuster movie out there. How come? Because you will feel like you are actually in there. You're gonna feel like you're watching the actual scene happening before your eyes. You won't feel like you're watching CGI. You won't feel cheated. You're gonna think, "How the hell are they doing it?" I truly wish it will nab the Oscar for visual effect.
I won't tell the plot here. You have to see it by yourself. So, is this a perfect movie? By all means, no. That title will only belong to Godfather 1&2. But District 9 will give you a movie experience that you wish to have each time you saw a movie.
I gotta see it again!
